Red Dog has passed the $10 million mark at the Australian box office - the equivalent of $100 million in the US - to be a certified blockbuster.
Kriv Stenders' crowd-pleasing, critically acclaimed adaptation of Louis de Bernieres' novella about a kelpie who wandered the Pilbara in the 1970s made another $1.94 million at the weekend to take it to $10.55 million and see it hold the number two position behind Horrible Bosses.
Red Dog has enjoyed an astonishing run in its first four weeks at the Australian box office, defying the usual downward trend movies experience after the opening weekend.
It has enjoyed big percentage increases each week and knocked off major America releases such as Cowboys and Aliens and Conan the Barbarian in their respective openings.
The WA production has moved into the all-time Australian top 20, passing The Castle and setting its sights on The Piano, Lantana and Young Einstein.
The box-office success of Red Dog augurs well for its release in Britain in November.

page 8 by Rourke Walsh RED Dog, the roaming kelpie who patrolled the Pilbara throughout the 1970s, was recently brought to life on the silver screen. However it was the work of author Nancy Gillespie, who first recognised the lovable canine as a friend to all, immortalising the legend in print almost three decades earlier. Ms Gillespie, who published the book Red Dog in 1983, recants many fond tales along with a collection of poetry from her time living in the North West. The book is set to be re-released to a collection of locations throughout the Pilbara, something she said she had been wanting for a long time. “It was something that we had in mind and it was just the right time to do it,” Ms Gillespie said. “We knew Red Dog and he actually spent a lot of time with us up in the North West and when he died somebody dared me to actually write a book about him so I did.” Although Hollywood may have enhanced the details surrounding some of Red Dog’s feats for the movie all of the stories in Ms Gillespie’s book are true. “The biggest memory I think I have of Red Dog is when all of us pregnant ladies who lived in the local caravan park at the time were near our due dates,” she said. “We would get up to go to the toilet in the middle of the night and the dog would be there and escort us to the toilets and back.” Ms Gillespie lived in the North West for about 10 years between the mid 70’s and 80’s and said Red was just a dog everyone loved. “When you say Red Dog didn’t have an owner I think you will find everybody in Dampier and Karratha and around actually owned him,” she said. “When one of my children was sick he came and sat on the bed for three days until he was better; that’s just the type of dog he was.” Another memory she has of Red Dog was driving home from work one day when he jumped out in front of her car because he had missed his bus. “When we got into Dampier I said right now out you go you can go to the mess yourself and he wouldn’t get out,” she said. “The bus pulled up, I said to the bus driver I can’t get him out of my car, I need to get home to feed my family and he just whistled and the dog got out and got on the front seat of the bus and it took off. “He was a wanderlust dog; he just did his own thing.” Ms Gillespie won a Pilbara Writers Group Award in 1983 for the book and the new edition will soon be available from tourist information centres across the region.
